Rijkerswoerdse Plassen

Rijkerswoerdse Plassen consists of two lakes situated between Arnhem and Elst that offer multiple settings for swimming, walking, and water sports. The area includes beaches, marked trails, and facilities designed to accommodate different types of outdoor recreation throughout the year.

These lakes came into being through sand mining operations that started in the late 1970s, transforming agricultural land into a public recreation zone. Over time, the excavated areas developed into a functioning leisure destination that now serves the surrounding communities.

The area draws visitors year-round for outdoor celebrations and seasonal gatherings that bring together people from nearby towns. You can experience the local rhythm of swimming, picnicking, and socializing along the shores.

The area is open to visitors daily, though parking becomes limited on busy summer weekends. Arriving early in the morning or visiting on weekdays helps you find space more easily.

The western lake was the first to be excavated, and a sand deposit from the original mining work remains visible on its southern edge. This quiet remnant tells the story of how the land underwent a complete transformation here.
