Grote of Sint-Maartenskerk, Gothic church in Elst, Netherlands.
The Grote Sint-Maartenskerk is a Gothic church with two aisles running down its length and a chancel divided into three sections. The western tower rises above the entrance and tapers to an octagonal point at the top.
The land where this church stands was already sacred in Roman times, with remains of two temples from the first century found during excavations in 1947. The church was built later over these ancient foundations.
The vault paintings inside show medieval scenes and patterns that were restored using traditional methods from that era. Walking through, you can see how these decorations once guided people's thoughts during worship.
The church is easy to reach on foot and sits in the center of town. Services move to a different location during winter months, so it is worth checking ahead about where gatherings take place before your visit.
The tower contains an organ with pipes dating to the 16th century, built by master craftsman Peter Jansz de Swart. These historical pipes remain in working order and represent a rare example of craftsmanship from that period.
