Grote of Sint-Maartenskerk, Gothic church in Elst, Netherlands.
The Grote of Sint-Maartenskerk is a Gothic church in Overbetuwe, in the Netherlands, with two aisles along its length and a chancel divided into three sections. The western tower stands above the main entrance and ends in an octagonal top.
Long before the church was built, the ground beneath it was considered sacred, with the remains of two Roman temples from the 1st century found during excavations in 1947. The building that stands today was raised over these ancient foundations.
The painted vault decorations inside show medieval patterns that were uncovered and carefully restored. They give a clear sense of how images and color once shaped the experience of worship in a space like this.
The church sits in the center of Overbetuwe and is easy to reach on foot from most points in the town. In winter, services sometimes take place elsewhere, so it is worth checking ahead before planning a visit around them.
The tower houses an organ with pipes dating to the 16th century, made by craftsman Peter Jansz de Swart. These pipes are still in working order and are considered one of the few surviving instruments of their kind from that period in the region.
