Port of Waal, Maritime industrial port in Waalhaven-Eemhaven district, Netherlands
Port of Waal is an industrial harbor on the south bank of the Maas River in Rotterdam. It consists of several interconnected basins designed to handle different types of cargo and vessels.
The site was used as an airport from the 1920s until it was destroyed during the Second World War. After the war, the area was gradually converted into a commercial port for cargo handling.
The port is woven into everyday life in Rotterdam, as many goods sold in the city pass through this area first. People living nearby grow up with cranes and cargo ships as a normal part of the skyline.
The port is accessible directly via the Nieuwe Waterweg, with no locks or bridges blocking the route for large vessels. The surrounding area connects well to major roads, making it easy to reach by different means of transport.
Before becoming a port, the site was Rotterdam's main airport, handling scheduled passenger flights. Almost nothing of that earlier function remains visible today, as the entire area was reshaped to serve maritime cargo operations.
