Huize Tavenier, Art Nouveau villa in Groningen, Netherlands
Huize Tavenier is an Art Nouveau house with a white brick facade, round-arch windows, and thick granite columns. The roof has an irregular tent shape decorated with floral designs across the entire structure.
The building was constructed in 1905 as a residence for a widow from a successful business family. It was originally known by a different name before taking its current name.
The villa is named after a former owner and displays interior marble and glasswork connected to the family's business interests. The decoration tells through its motifs about the economic life of those who first lived here.
The building is located on Ubbo Emmiussingel and is protected as a national monument. Today it functions as office space, so viewing it from the outside is the most straightforward approach.
From the middle of the 20th century until 1981, the house served as a maternity clinic and became an important place in the lives of many regional residents. This medical function was a surprising chapter in the building's history.
