Villa Heymans

Villa Heymans is a residential building with a square footprint, two stories and an attic topped by intersecting red-tiled roofs and bright red brick facades. The structure displays the distinctive architectural character typical of this residential area.

Professor Gerard Heymans commissioned architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage in 1894 to design this villa, a key work from the early phase of modern Dutch architecture. The house was built during a shift away from traditional styles toward new design approaches.

The ground floor interior preserves 19th-century craftsmanship through oak paneling, carved wooden beams, and stained glass windows. These rooms show how wealthy households decorated their homes during that era.

The building has served as office space since 1960 with various tenants using it for their daily work. When visiting, keep in mind that it functions as an active workplace, so access may be limited to certain times.

A rectangular wooden structure with red roof tiles stands in the garden, originally built as Professor Heymans' personal research and work studio. This small outbuilding shows how scholars created separate workspaces for themselves.
