Pan van Persijn, Recreational estate and dune area in Katwijk and Wassenaar, Netherlands
Pan van Persijn is a dune and recreation area located between the municipalities of Katwijk and Wassenaar in the Netherlands. It consists of forested dunes, open grasslands, and ponds, all connected by a network of walking and cycling trails.
The Persijn family acquired this land in the 16th century and used it as hunting grounds for their estate. During World War II, military structures were built across the area, and some of those remains can still be seen today.
The name Pan van Persijn comes from the Persijn family, who once owned this land as part of their private estate. Today, visitors can spot traces of that past in the form of old pathways and landscape features that were shaped by human hands long ago.
The area is accessible via Wassenaarseweg, where parking is available on site. For longer walks, it helps to carry a map or follow the marked trails, since the terrain covers a large stretch across two municipalities.
Scottish Highland cattle graze in the northern part of the area and keep the vegetation low in a natural way. A nature trail with carved wooden animal figures was designed for families with children to explore the grounds.
