BBL Pipeline, Gas pipeline between Balgzand and Bacton, Netherlands
The BBL Pipeline is a gas transmission line running beneath the North Sea, connecting the Dutch gas network to a British terminal on the other side. The system operates in both directions and uses compressor stations to maintain the necessary pressure for continuous flow.
The pipeline was built in 2006 and began operating shortly after completion. Its creation came from a shared need between both nations to strengthen their energy connections.
The pipeline links two major European gas trading hubs, allowing the Netherlands and Britain to trade energy resources and support each other's energy needs.
The pipeline runs entirely underwater and is not accessible or visible from the shore. Visitors can learn about the system through information centers at the onshore terminal facilities.
A specialized compressor station on land boosts the gas pressure so it can travel the long distance under the sea. This system allows the line to operate bidirectionally when needed.
