Schefferkamp, Military barracks in Westland, Netherlands
Schefferkamp is a former military barracks complex in Westland that contained multiple buildings and wooden structures built to house service personnel. The site sits near De Lier in South Holland's agricultural region.
The barracks opened in 1954 and took its name from Flight Observer Jan Frederik Scheffer, an early figure in Netherlands aviation. The installation served both Air Force and Army branches until it closed in 1994.
The barracks transformed into an asylum seekers center following its military closure, providing accommodation for more than 360 individuals until 2003.
The site is not open to the public today as it was privatized after military operations ended. The surrounding agricultural area offers few visitor facilities, so come prepared for a rural setting.
After closure, the grounds were repurposed for flower cultivation, with Arcadia Chrysanten establishing a greenhouse for cut chrysanthemum production in 2018. This transformation shows how former military sites blend back into the region's farming landscape.
