Holterberg, Nature area and mountain in Rijssen-Holten, Netherlands
Holterberg is a forested hill and nature area in Rijssen-Holten, located within the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park and covered with a mix of woodland and heath. A central square at the top serves as the main hub, with restaurants and recreational facilities nearby.
The area gained a lasting significance during World War II, when Canadian soldiers fought in this region as part of the liberation of the Netherlands. A military cemetery nearby holds the graves of some of those soldiers and remains open to visitors today.
A nature museum on the hill introduces visitors to the local wildlife through changing exhibitions and guided seasonal walks. Workshops let people discover more about the plants and animals that live in this part of the Netherlands.
The central square is a good starting point, as several marked walking and biking routes set off from there in different directions. Routes vary in length and difficulty, so it is easy to pick one that fits the time and energy available.
The Netherlands is generally thought of as flat, but this hill is one of the few places in the country where you can feel a noticeable change in elevation while walking. Mountain bikers have five marked routes to choose from, each designed for a different level of riding skill.
