Twilhaar Camp, Memorial labor camp in Nijverdal, Netherlands.
Twilhaar Camp is a memorial marking a labor site in Nijverdal located along Paltheweg. The grounds still show traces of the original layout through visible ground remnants and fence post marks from the two-building complex that once stood here.
The site began in 1940 as a facility for unemployed men doing land reclamation work and was converted in 1942 to hold Jewish laborers. Those held here were transported to Westerbork in 1942, a major transit point for deportations.
The name Twilhaar comes from the site's original purpose as a labor work area. Today visitors can see how the two concrete panels stand as markers of remembrance for those who were held here.
The site can be explored on foot and the ground markings show where the barracks once stood. Wear comfortable shoes since the ground is uneven and can become muddy during wet weather.
The two concrete panels at the site were installed in 1995 with one deliberately faded to represent memory loss among those detained here. This artistic choice makes the act of forgetting and remembering itself part of the memorial experience.
