Tornado, Steel roller coaster in Hellendoorn, Netherlands.
Tornado is a steel roller coaster at Avonturenpark Hellendoorn in the Netherlands, running along a track of 460 meters. The layout includes two inversions: a vertical loop and a corkscrew element that turn riders upside down during the ride.
The ride was built in 1990 by Dutch manufacturer Vekoma as an MK-1200 model, one of the first inversions coasters in the park. Its arrival marked the point when the park began to appeal to older visitors looking for more intense experiences.
For many Dutch children, this is the first ride that turns them upside down, and it tends to stay in memory for a long time. That shared experience gives the attraction a special place among families who return to the park year after year.
The ride involves inversions and rapid direction changes, so anyone sensitive to head or neck movements should take that into account before joining the queue. Going earlier in the day usually means shorter waits, as lines tend to grow through the afternoon.
In 2021, the restraint system was changed from over-the-shoulder harnesses to lap bars, which changed how the ride feels in a noticeable way. Riders who knew the old version found that the same track suddenly felt quite different with more freedom around the upper body.
