Sint-Pieter boven

Sint-Pieter boven is a neo-Gothic church in Maastricht designed as a cruciform basilica with a sturdy tower braced by buttresses and topped by an octagonal spire. Inside, a mechanical organ from 1850 originally installed elsewhere serves as a notable feature alongside the stained glass.

Construction began in 1872 and finished in 1875, replacing an older building that had occupied the Maas valley location since 1748. The new structure was needed to serve the growing parish community.

The name refers to Saint Peter, whose life story is told through the stained glass windows that greet visitors as they enter. The parish community continues to gather here for worship and religious celebrations.

This is an active parish church that continues to serve its community, so visitors should be respectful of services and prayer times. Entrance is generally accessible during times when services are not taking place.

The choir faces west rather than east, which is unusual since most churches follow the traditional eastward orientation. This uncommon arrangement sets it apart from standard church construction practices.
