Meijendel

Meijendel is a nature reserve in Wassenaar with rolling dunes, valleys, woodlands, and shallow lakes spread across the landscape. These water bodies help filter and clean drinking water for the surrounding communities.

Management of the dunes began in the 1850s when the area became vital for supplying clean water to The Hague's expanding population. This water filtration system has remained central to the region's infrastructure ever since.

The visitor center offers guided tours and exhibits that introduce people to the plant and animal life found in these dunes. Many come here to learn about the creatures and plants that thrive in this environment.

Well-marked hiking and cycling paths cross the reserve, with signposts directing you to viewpoints and seating areas. Wear sturdy shoes and stick to the trails to help protect the fragile dune environment.

The reserve holds the largest population of nightingales in the Netherlands, especially during spring months. Bird watchers travel here to hear and spot these rare singers in their natural habitat.
