Schiecentrale, Historic power station in Lloydkwartier, Netherlands.
The Schiecentrale is a former power plant comprising two connected sections, one featuring a 16-level tower with protruding storage units and large windows overlooking the port. The complex was modernized between 1996 and 2008 while retaining its industrial character.
Built in 1904 as Rotterdam's first power plant, the structure generated electricity for the growing city. Decades later, it was transformed into a mixed-use space with offices, studios, and homes as energy production moved elsewhere.
The building now hosts creative businesses, with film studios and media companies working alongside residential spaces in the revitalized Lloydkwartier. This mix of work and living has turned the area into a gathering place for people involved in culture and media.
The building sits along Sint-Jobsweg and is best viewed in daylight when the large windows showcase the harbor views. Allow enough time to explore both the exterior and any accessible indoor areas, as the site spans multiple connected blocks.
The eastern side of the structure features striking storage boxes arranged like stacked crates along the facade. From this vantage point, three of Rotterdam's well-known landmarks become visible across the skyline and harbor.
