Esonstêd
Esonstêd is a holiday village in Noardeast-Fryslân built around an artificial lake and designed to resemble a medieval Frisian town. The park includes an indoor swimming pool, playgrounds, restaurants, and rental facilities, all set within a quiet residential layout.
The park was built between 2004 and 2007 and named after a medieval settlement that may have once occupied the same location. While the historical existence of this settlement remains unconfirmed, the legend shapes the design and identity of the modern park.
The name Esonstêd references a medieval Frisian settlement, and this history shapes how the village looks today. The houses mimic traditional Frisian farmhouse style, creating a sense of connection to the region's rural past.
The park is well suited for cycling, with bike rentals available on site, and sits close to the Lauwersmeer lake. Since dining options within the village are limited, it is helpful to plan meals ahead or bring your own supplies if staying for several days.
A ferry service from the village connects to the island of Schiermonnikoog, operated by a ship called the MS Esonborg, making it easy for visitors to cycle on the island. This direct boat link allows day trips to nearby dunes and beaches without lengthy travel time.
