Haaldersbroek, Protected hamlet in Zaanstad, Netherlands
Haaldersbroek is a small residential settlement in the southeast of Kalverpolder, directly adjacent to the tourist area of Zaanse Schans. The community consists of houses spread throughout what was once a wetland landscape.
The settlement began in the late 14th century as a fishing village, with the oldest remaining house dating from 1661. The surrounding area was later drained and transformed into Kalverpolder, marking a major shift in the landscape.
The settlement maintains its character as a small residential community that stands apart from surrounding modern development. You can see how traditional house arrangements and the preserved rural layout give the place its distinct identity.
The place is easily reached from nearby Zaandam and benefits from proximity to that city's larger services and facilities. The best time to visit is during daylight hours when you can clearly see the settlement layout and surroundings.
The name comes from a former swamp area that now exists as Kalverpolder. This transformation from wetland into cultivated polder represents a key example of Dutch water management and land reclamation.
