Groot Kasteel, Deurne

Groot Kasteel is the ruins of a medieval castle featuring stone walls, corner towers, and a fortified moat surrounding the main building. The surviving sections display the original layout of the residence and defensive installations.

The castle was founded before 1397 by the Van Doerne family and became a fief of the Duke of Brabant that same year. This transfer to ducal authority marked an important shift in its regional significance.

This location served as a seat for a Dutch noble family and held importance in local society. The remains today reflect the status and lifestyle of the aristocrats who once inhabited it.

The ruins are located at Haageind 37 and managed by Sociëteit Walhalla, which has maintained the site since 1966. Access may vary depending on the season and any special events taking place.

Excavations in 1998 uncovered a sophisticated water system that supplied the medieval castle. This hidden network reveals how carefully engineered the original infrastructure was.
