NDSM, Former shipyard complex in Amsterdam Noord, Netherlands.
The NDSM is a former shipyard with multiple large brick halls, steel structures, and distinctive blue doors facing the IJ waterfront. The buildings clearly display their industrial past and now contain art spaces, workshops, and event venues.
The site was founded between 1919 and 1920 as a major Dutch shipbuilding company and became one of the country's main shipyards. After shipbuilding ceased, it was gradually transformed into a creative center.
Today the site serves as a center for artists, musicians, and creative professionals who use the former industrial halls for exhibitions, concerts, and community events. Visitors encounter an active creative scene where cultural projects continuously animate the expansive grounds.
The site is free to access and sits across the IJ, reached by a regular ferry service from Central Station. The best time to visit is during weekend events or in settled weather, when more activities and exhibitions are open.
Inside the main hall sits a remarkable six-aisled structure with original crane track systems still visible today. These industrial elements create an unusual backdrop for contemporary art installations and events.
