Tolhuis, Custom house in Amsterdam-Noord, Netherlands.
Tolhuis is a custom house in Amsterdam-Noord with characteristic yellow brick facade and a T-shaped floor plan. The main section rises two stories in the center while lower wings extend on both sides, each topped with pitched roofs.
A toll collection building first occupied this site in 1665, processing fees from ferry passengers crossing the waterfront. The current structure was built in 1859 based on a design by architect Willem Springer to replace the earlier building.
The name Tolhuis refers to its original purpose as a toll collection point on the waterfront. Today the building with its distinctive yellow brick appearance serves as a gathering place where visitors come to dine and spend time.
The building is located at Buiksloterweg 7 and easily accessible on foot, though it now operates as a restaurant. As a protected national monument, the space is maintained with care and visitors should respect its heritage status when visiting.
A modern wedding hall was added in 1989 on the garden side, designed by architect Theo Bosch to complement the historic structure. This addition was carefully designed so that the street-facing appearance of the building would not be changed.
