Infoversum, Movie theater in Groningen, Netherlands
Infoversum is a cinema in Groningen featuring a spiral dome with a white spherical core surrounded by 83 weathering steel panels that form the curved exterior. The first floor houses a 20-meter projection screen with reclining seats, while the ground level contains an interactive exhibition space called Infowave.
The project was initiated by Professor Edwin Valentijn from the University of Groningen's astronomy department and opened in June 2014. Its design employed shipbuilding construction methods to achieve the building's distinctive curved forms.
The theater blends cinema technology with educational shows about nature, space, and scientific discoveries that appeal to the local community.
The building's design allows clear sightlines between the interactive exhibition and the cinema, making it easy to navigate both areas. Plan for enough time to explore the exhibition space before or after your screening.
The building was constructed using innovative shipbuilding and engineering techniques, causing it to shift its appearance dramatically as light conditions change throughout the day. The weathering steel panels develop a natural rust patina over time, giving the structure an organic quality that evolves with age.
