Kissing Couple XXXL, Large sculpture at Hempontplein, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Kissing Couple XXXL is a large sculpture at Hempontplein in Amsterdam showing two figures dressed in traditional Dutch clothing. The male figure stands 8.6 meters tall while the female figure measures 8.1 meters, and both are cast from epoxy resin.
The sculpture was commissioned by FietsCoalitie and installed on November 30, 2017, to mark a new bicycle route. It connects Zaanstad with Sloterdijk and Amsterdam Center, creating a recognizable landmark for cyclists traveling between these areas.
The figures reference the Dutch tradition of Delftware kissing couples found in folk decorative arts, representing affection in small ceramic form. This monumental version brings a classical decorative motif into contemporary public space.
The sculpture stands next to the Hempont ferry terminal and serves as a meeting point with charging stations for electric bicycles and picnic tables. The area is easily accessible on foot and offers practical facilities for cyclists wanting to take a break.
The two figures stand extremely close together, with just 20 centimeters separating their lips. The epoxy material was chosen because it kept the combined weight to 6,700 kilograms, making the pieces manageable for installation.
