Gaustad Hospital, Psychiatric hospital and heritage site in Oslo, Norway
The hospital complex includes multiple buildings with dedicated facilities for mental health treatment, substance abuse care, and medical research programs.
Established in 1855 as Norway's first psychiatric hospital, the facility was designed by architect Heinrich Ernst Schirmer following guidelines from the Insane Act of 1848.
The hospital museum in building 11 presents exhibits documenting the evolution of psychiatric care in Norway through medical instruments and historical photographs.
Visitors can access the hospital via tram to Rikshospitalet main entrance, followed by an eight-minute walk, or use the parking facilities near buildings 10 and 19.
During World War II, hospital staff protected patients from German soldiers by creating strong odors using collected urine throughout the facility.
