Gaustad Hospital

Gaustad Hospital is a medical facility in Oslo with multiple buildings providing psychiatric treatment, addiction care, and medical research services. The complex contains different specialized sections organized for various healthcare purposes.

The hospital was founded in 1855 as Norway's first psychiatric facility and was designed by architect Heinrich Ernst Schirmer. It was built following regulations from the 1848 mental health legislation.

The hospital museum shows how psychiatric care in Norway has changed over time through medical tools and old photographs. You can see how treatment methods developed and what doctors used to use.

You can reach the site by tram to the Rikshospitalet main entrance and then walk to the buildings. Parking is available near buildings 10 and 19 if you need it.

During World War II, staff members at the hospital protected patients from German soldiers using unconventional methods to create unpleasant odors throughout the buildings. This resourceful action helped keep patients safe during a difficult period.
