Blindern Studenterhjem, University dormitory in Blindern, Norway
Blindern Studenterhjem is a neoclassical residential building near the University of Oslo that houses approximately 230 students in different room types. The residence includes shared facilities such as kitchen spaces, a sauna, and recreational areas within its protected heritage grounds.
Alette Schreiner founded the residence in 1917 during World War I to address housing challenges for students facing difficult circumstances. She raised significant funds to establish this housing initiative for the university community.
The residence operates as a foundation with no political or religious ties, shaped by shared decision-making between university representatives and the students living there. This approach influences how residents interact and creates a sense of collective responsibility for their shared home.
The residence provides three daily meals and a range of facilities to support daily living for residents. The buildings and grounds are protected heritage sites, reflecting their historical importance and well-maintained character.
During World War II, occupying forces used the building, creating divisions within the student community that left lasting impressions. This period became a defining chapter in the residence's history and collective memory.
