Chateau Neuf, Student center and heritage site in Majorstuen, Oslo, Norway
Chateau Neuf is a student center and heritage site in Majorstuen, built in 1971 with a mix of concrete and glass designed by architects Kjell Lund and Nils Slaatto. The building spans multiple levels with performance spaces, bars, cafes, and gathering areas for student activities.
The Norwegian Students' Society established this location in 1971 after years of occupying different sites across Oslo and securing funding through successful campaigns in the 1950s. The project grew from the student community's desire to create their own dedicated center for gatherings and cultural activities.
The center serves as a gathering place for student discussions and cultural events where people come together to exchange ideas. Regular Thursday debates reflect the active academic community that defines the space.
The center is located at Slemdalsveien 15 near the Blindern campus of the University of Oslo and is easily accessible by different means of transport. Plan enough time to explore the multiple levels and enjoy the cafes and bars available throughout the space.
The French name contains a linguistic wordplay, as 'neuf' sounds like the Norwegian word for pig squeaks and references the student society's mascot. This playful reference is little known among visitors yet adds an extra layer of meaning to the place.
