Krossobanen, Aerial tramway in Rjukan, Norway

Krossobanen is an aerial tramway in Rjukan that travels horizontally for 814 meters while rising 498 meters between its two stations. The system connects the lower part of town with the upper station, which sits at 886 meters elevation.

The tramway was built in 1928 by the Bleichert company as a gift from Norsk Hydro to the people of Rjukan. This construction served as a practical solution to connect the valley town with higher areas.

The two cable cars carry names from Norwegian nature, with one called Tyttebær (cranberry) and the other Blåbær (blueberry). These names connect the transport system to the surrounding landscape and local plant life.

The lower station offers plenty of parking for visitors arriving by car. Wear layers and weather-appropriate clothing, as conditions at the upper station can differ significantly from those in the valley below.

From October to March, this tramway serves a special purpose for residents: it allows them to reach the sun, which remains hidden behind the mountains in the valley below during winter. This seasonal journey offers a remarkable experience that few cable cars elsewhere provide.
