Brent, Oil and gas field in North Sea, United Kingdom.
The Brent Field is located in the East Shetland Basin approximately 186 kilometers northeast of Lerwick in Scotland, spanning water depths of about 140 meters. The field operated with four production platforms and relied on pipelines to move oil and gas to onshore facilities.
Shell discovered the field in 1971 and began production in 1976 with offshore platforms. It became a major source of oil for decades and significantly contributed to North Sea energy development.
Shell named their United Kingdom oil fields after seabirds in alphabetical order of discovery, with Brent following Auk in the sequence.
The field is located far offshore in the North Sea and is not accessible to visitors. Information about the installation can be found in oil and gas museums or exhibitions along the Scottish coast and in Shetland.
The field produced 504,000 barrels of oil daily at its 1982 peak, contributing approximately three billion barrels of oil equivalent by 2008.
