Rombaken, Coastal fjord in Narvik Municipality, Norway
Rombaken is a fjord extending roughly 20 kilometers inland from the Ofotfjorden, surrounded by steep mountain walls on both sides. Two major bridges cross the waterway at different locations, linking the shores together.
The fjord became the site of a major naval battle in 1940 during World War II, when German warships were sunk during combat operations. This event left a lasting mark on the region's history and memory.
Northern Norwegian maritime traditions continue in the fjord waters through regular fishing activities, boat transportation, and seasonal celebrations near the shores.
European routes E06 and E10 run along the northern shores, making the fjord easily accessible by car from the region. Several viewpoints and stopping areas along these roads allow visitors to take in the landscape and water views.
The destroyer Georg Thiele remains partially visible above the waterline at the fjord bottom, while other warships rest deeper underwater. These wrecks serve as silent reminders of the dramatic events that unfolded here in 1940.
