Kvitfjell, Ski resort in Ringebu Municipality, Norway
Kvitfjell is a ski resort in the Ringebu valley in Norway, with runs spread across several mountain faces connected by a network of lifts. The slopes cover a range of difficulty, from gentle beginner runs to steeper descents on the upper mountain.
Kvitfjell was developed and brought to international attention when it hosted the alpine skiing events of the 1994 Winter Olympics, held in the Lillehammer region. The infrastructure built for those games remains the backbone of the resort today.
Kvitfjell draws many Norwegian families for whom skiing is simply part of winter life, not a special occasion. On weekends and school holidays, the slopes fill with locals of all ages moving naturally and confidently on skis.
The resort is easy to reach from Lillehammer along the main valley road, making it a straightforward day trip or longer stay. Layers are important since the weather higher up can change quickly even on days that start clear.
The downhill course used for the 1994 Olympic races is still open to regular visitors today, not just to competitors. Skiing it means following the same line that the world's top racers took down the mountain during those games.
