Engabreen, Glacier system in Meløy Municipality, Norway

Engabreen is a large glacier system in northern Norway featuring multiple ice streams that branch downward into surrounding lakes below. The ice displays striking shades of blue, revealing how the frozen mass constantly moves and shifts across the landscape.

Norwegian researchers began studying this glacier system in the early 1900s and developed methods to track glacial movement and changes. These early investigations created the foundation for long-term monitoring that continues through the present day.

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate maintains a laboratory beneath Engabreen, contributing to international glacier research and education programs.

Visit during warmer months when access and visibility are most favorable, and plan time to fully explore the different ice formations. Wear sturdy footwear and check weather conditions, as mountain climate can change rapidly throughout the day.

This glacier sits at only 20 meters above sea level, making it the lowest glacial point on the European mainland. This unusually low location makes it a sensitive indicator of climate changes and temperature shifts.
