Nordmarka

Nordmarka is a large forested region north of Oslo with rolling hills, multiple lakes, and varied terrain. The area spreads across several municipalities and offers both winter ski routes and summer walking paths throughout its landscape.

The region was Crown property during medieval times and later came under church ownership. Over centuries it gradually became valued as a recreation space for those living nearby.

The forest has become a place where Oslo residents regularly escape for outdoor activities throughout the year. The abundance of marked trails shows how deeply this space is woven into the daily rhythm of city life.

Winter brings hundreds of kilometers of ski trails, while summer is ideal for hiking and swimming in the lakes. Access is straightforward, though visitors should prepare for rapidly changing weather and bring appropriate gear for the season.

Legislation passed in 2009 protects this forest specifically to preserve it as a recreation space for future generations. This legal framework makes it one of Scandinavia's most carefully protected outdoor areas.
