Byparken, Public park in central Bergen, Norway
Byparken is a public park in central Bergen arranged around two connected ponds, Lungegardsvannet and Smalungeren. The grounds feature tree-lined pathways, seasonal flower beds, and multiple seating areas for visitors to rest and enjoy the landscape.
The park was established in 1865 following Bergen's devastating fire of 1855, which destroyed much of the city. Its creation reflected the municipality's efforts to introduce fire safety measures and create protective spaces within the rebuilt city.
The Music Pavilion hosts regular performances and cultural events that draw locals throughout the year. The Festplassen area becomes especially lively during Norway's Constitution Day celebrations, showing how the community gathers here for shared moments.
Light rail connections make the park easy to reach from different parts of the city. Wide, well-maintained paths throughout both sections allow comfortable walking, and benches are placed regularly for rest.
The two ponds have folksy names referring to lungs: the larger is called the Big Lung and the smaller the Small Lung. Although land was filled between them over time, they remain connected through underground channels beneath the park.
