Speilsalen, Glacial formation at Trollheimen mountains, Norway
Speilsalen is a glacial cavity that formed beneath Blåhøa mountain in Oppdal municipality within the Trollheimen range. A meltwater stream flowing through the tunnel created smooth ice surfaces spanning roughly 200 to 300 meters in length.
The ice cave formed thousands of years ago as meltwater continuously carved passages beneath the advancing glacier. The structure remained intact until a collapse in August 2007 destroyed this natural formation.
Speilsalen attracted numerous geologists and researchers who studied the formation to understand glacial processes in Norwegian mountains.
Access requires advanced mountaineering skills and guidance from experienced local climbers familiar with the terrain. Proper equipment and thorough preparation are essential to safely navigate the challenging alpine conditions.
The tunnel was famous for its mirror-like ice walls that created striking light reflections throughout its interior. These reflective surfaces resulted from countless years of polishing by the steady flow of meltwater beneath the glacier.
