Tønsberg tønde, Medieval tower on Castle Hill in Tønsberg, Norway.
Tønsberg tønde is a stone tower on Castle Hill rising 17 meters above the surrounding landscape. The structure occupies the site of Norway's largest medieval fortress, which once defended the town and harbor.
The fortress Tunsberghus occupied this site from the 13th to 16th centuries as Norway's largest castle of its time. The present tower was built in 1888 to commemorate Tønsberg's thousand-year history.
The tower holds signatures carved by three Norwegian monarchs inside its walls and displays the original cross from Maria Church. These personal marks connect the reigning family directly to this historic location.
The tower is typically open to visitors from May through September, and internal stairs allow access to viewing platforms near the top. Sturdy footwear is advisable since the internal path is steep and narrow in places.
Below the tower spread the ruins of Castrum Tunsbergis with its massive outer walls that stretched for hundreds of meters. This ruin park ranks among Scandinavia's largest and reveals the true scale of the medieval fortress.
