Sørmarka, Forest recreational area in Follo region, Norway
Sørmarka is a forest area in the Follo region that spreads across multiple municipalities with rolling hills, thick woods, and many lakes set below 300 meters in elevation. The terrain shows the natural pattern of north-south oriented valleys carved into ancient bedrock.
People have settled in this area for over 11,000 years, as shown by archaeological discoveries. Medieval stone churches from the 1150s later marked parish boundaries and indicate long-term human presence.
The old Fredrikshald road corridor remains visible in the landscape and represents how people once traveled through this region. Walking through these valleys, you can sense the route that connected communities for centuries.
The area has several access points, including Greverud golf course, from which visitors can begin walks and activities. In winter, marked trails are regularly groomed to make skiing and cross-country movement pleasant.
The landscape sits on basement rock that is over a billion years old, forming the geological foundation of the region. This deep geological history shapes the valleys you walk through.
