Hotel Viking, hotel in Oslo, Norway
Hotel Viking is a large hotel in central Oslo housing over 800 rooms and reopened in 2019 following extensive renovation work. The building features multiple conference spaces, expansive windows that flood interiors with light, and a spacious lobby designed for guest comfort.
The original building was constructed in the early 1950s to host visitors for the 1952 Winter Olympics and was Scandinavia's largest hotel at the time. Architects Knut Knutsen and Fredrik Winsnes designed a modern structure to serve the expanding city.
The hotel hosts Spellemannsprisen, Norway's major music award ceremony, which takes place here annually beginning in 2024. The venue has become a gathering point for musicians, artists, and cultural figures celebrating new talent in the country.
The hotel sits centrally on Biskop Gunnerus' gate and is easily accessible by public transport with main railway stations nearby. The abundant natural light from expansive windows and central location make it convenient for exploring the city.
During the 2019 renovation, only the outer shell of the original tower was retained while the interior was completely rebuilt from scratch. This reflects the balance between honoring Oslo's Olympic legacy and meeting contemporary hospitality needs.
