History of Science Centre, Museum and science center in Seeb, Oman

The History of Science Centre is a museum and science center in Seeb, Oman, dedicated to the history of science in the Islamic world. The building features a modern concrete lattice facade and a central hall with a star-shaped skylight that directs light into the gallery spaces below.

The building was completed in the summer of 2016 and opened to visitors in December 2017. It was created to give lasting recognition to the contributions of Islamic scholars to world science, a subject that rarely receives this level of dedicated attention.

The exhibits show how scholars from the Islamic world advanced knowledge in astronomy, mathematics, geography, and optics between the 9th and 16th centuries. Visitors can see tools, models, and displays that bring these discoveries to life.

The centre has an outdoor plaza called the 'Magic Carpet', with fountains, trees, and a mural sundial that makes a good starting point for a visit. Inside, a grand staircase next to a water feature connects the ground floor to the exhibition spaces on the upper floor.

The building is oriented so that its facade changes throughout the day as sunlight passes through the concrete lattice and creates shifting patterns of shadow and light. This means the architecture itself is a kind of scientific instrument, linked directly to the theme of the museum.
