El Sira Communal Reserve

The reserve spans 616,413 hectares across three regions of Peru, featuring diverse ecosystems from tropical forests to mountain landscapes at elevations between 130 and 2250 meters.

The Peruvian government established El Sira Communal Reserve in 2001 to safeguard the Sira Mountains and preserve the sustainable practices of local indigenous communities.

Three indigenous groups, the Ashaninka, Shipibo-Conibo, and Yanesha peoples, maintain their traditional forest management practices within the reserve's boundaries.

SERNANP manages the reserve's resources and implements protection measures against deforestation, hunting, and other environmental threats throughout the protected area.

The reserve contains the only known population of Sira curassow birds, with fewer than 400 individuals remaining in the entire world.
