Yanesha Communal Reserve, Protected natural area in Oxapampa Province, Peru
Yanesha Communal Reserve is a protected natural area covering about 35,000 hectares of primary rainforest and freshwater ecosystems on the slopes of the Amazon basin. The landscape features various forest types that provide habitat for diverse plant and animal life.
Peru established this protected area in 1988 to safeguard both the natural environment and the indigenous communities within its boundaries. This action recognized the connection between traditional land management and the region's biological diversity.
The Yanesha people fully manage this space and blend their traditional approaches with modern conservation methods. Community members continue to apply ancestral knowledge in how they care for and use their territory.
Visitors can join guided walks led by community members who share knowledge about local wildlife in the area. Red brocket deer, monkeys, and many bird species live here and can be observed with trained guides.
This reserve is part of the UNESCO-recognized Oxapampa-Ashaninka-Yanesha Biosphere Reserve and connects with Yanachaga-Chemillen National Park to form one continuous protected zone. This larger network allows animals to move across wide distances and supports long-term ecosystem survival.
