Catarata El Tirol, Waterfall in Chanchamayo Province, Peru
Catarata El Tirol is a waterfall in Chanchamayo Province featuring three stepped cascades that drop roughly 35 meters and form a wide curtain of falling water. The flow ends in a vibrant emerald-green pool at the base.
The name comes from Austrian settlers who arrived in the San Ramon area during the 19th century colonization of central Peru. Their presence left a lasting mark on the place names and development of the region.
Local people view this waterfall as a sacred space where they gather for ceremonies tied to the agricultural calendar. It remains an important part of how the community connects with their natural surroundings.
The site is accessible from April through December with a walking trail of about 40 minutes starting from Puente Paloma bridge near San Ramon town. The path is straightforward to follow and passes through natural forest areas.
The natural pool at the base creates a water massage effect through its rocky formations while maintaining a steady temperature around 21 degrees Celsius. This makes bathing in the pool pleasant regardless of the season.
