Yanachaga–Chemillén National Park, National park in Oxapampa Province, Peru.

Yanachaga–Chemillén National Park is a protected area in Oxapampa Province that covers 122,000 hectares across the eastern slopes of the Peruvian Andes. The park stretches from 460 meters to 3,643 meters in elevation and contains both cloud forests and rainforests with rich biodiversity.

The park was established in 1986 to protect the natural diversity of the region. The forests here are relict from the Pleistocene epoch and survived past climate shifts that converted many forests elsewhere into grasslands.

The Yanesha indigenous people have shaped this region for generations, maintaining deep connections to the forest and its resources. Around the park, Germanic settlers and Andean migrants also live, creating a layered community with different languages, beliefs, and ways of living.

The park has two main entrances: one near Oxapampa town and another at Yuritunqui, each with basic lodging options available. Wear sturdy shoes and bring rain gear, as trails can become muddy and conditions vary depending on the season.

The park is home to over 527 bird species and houses Ctenophryne barbatula, an amphibian found nowhere else on Earth. This specialized frog reveals how this place provides irreplaceable shelter for certain species found in no other location.
