Yanachaga–Chemillén National Park

The protected area spans 122,000 hectares across the eastern slopes of the Peruvian Andes, featuring cloud forests and rainforests with elevations from 460 to 3,643 meters.

The national park, established in 1986, serves as a Pleistocene refuge where relict forests survived past climatic changes that transformed many forested regions into grasslands.

Three distinct populations inhabit the surrounding areas: the Yanesha indigenous people, Germanic settlers, and Andean immigrants from Peru's central highlands.

Visitors can access the park through two entrances: the main one near Carolina Egg Guesthaus in Oxapampa and another at Yuritunqui, with basic refuges available at both locations.

The park contains over 527 bird species and houses Ctenophryne barbatula, an amphibian species found exclusively within its boundaries.
