Puente Calicanto, Road bridge in Huanuco, Peru
Puente Calicanto is a stone arch bridge spanning the Huallaga River that connects Huanuco city center to Amarilis district. The structure crosses the water with three arches and measures approximately 60 meters in length.
Construction took place between 1879 and 1884 as the region underwent modernization and new connections between districts became necessary. The builders used granite stones joined with a special mixture of sand, lime, and egg whites.
The bridge displays French architectural elements introduced when European engineers worked in the Andes region. This design reflects how imported construction methods were adapted to local building practices and materials of the Sierra.
The bridge is accessible primarily for pedestrians and features benches on both sides where you can observe the river and surrounding landscape. Crossing takes only a few minutes and access is straightforward.
The bridge was built using river stones and egg whites, a construction technique rarely used in Peru. This building method was innovative at the time and helped the structure endure for generations.
