Pumarinri, Mountain summit in Huanuco Department, Peru.
Pumarinri is a mountain summit in the Huanuco region standing at approximately 5,465 meters, characterized by steep glacial terrain and multiple high-altitude passes. The peak rises within the Huayhuash range, positioned among other significant summits in the area.
The mountain gained attention from international mountaineering expeditions during the 1980s, which established climbing routes and documented achievements on the peak. These early explorations created a foundation for modern mountaineering activity in this range.
The name comes from Quechua, combining words for puma and ear, reflecting how indigenous peoples named mountain features after animal characteristics. This naming practice remains common throughout the Andes and shows how closely local communities connected with their natural surroundings.
Expeditions to the summit operate between April and November, with proper altitude acclimatization necessary before attempting the climb. Visitors need to bring technical climbing equipment and be prepared for steep glacial sections.
From the summit, visitors can see neighboring peaks Yerupaja at 6,636 meters and Siula Grande at 6,354 meters. This viewpoint allows climbers to observe several higher peaks within the Huayhuash range from a single location.
