Huanuco Department, Administrative region in central Peru
Huanuco Department is an administrative region in central Peru that spans mountain peaks and jungle areas. The elevation changes from deep valleys to highland plateaus, creating a territory that covers several climate zones.
People have inhabited the area since around 4200 BC, as shown by archaeological findings at the Kotosh settlement. This early occupation makes the territory one of the oldest inhabited regions on the South American continent.
People across the territory speak Spanish in most daily interactions, while many households also maintain Huanuco Quechua in their conversations. This linguistic presence becomes evident in local markets and community gatherings, where both languages flow side by side.
The territory divides into eleven provinces with seventy-five districts, connected through a road network. These connections lead to major Peruvian cities and allow travel through different elevation levels.
The El Sira Communal Reserve within the area shelters plants and animals adapted to both mountain landscapes and rainforest environments. This dual adaptation allows species to exist in both habitats at the same time.
