Siula Grande, Mountain summit in Cordillera Huayhuash, Peru.
Siula Grande is a mountain peak in the Cordillera Huayhuash with an elevation of about 6,344 meters (20,823 feet) and distinctive ice formations. A smaller companion peak called Siula Chico sits nearby at about 6,260 meters (20,535 feet) and forms part of the same massif.
The first successful ascent occurred in 1936 when Austrian mountaineers reached the summit via the North Ridge. The west face gained attention decades later when climbers navigating this route had to survive an unexpected crisis.
The mountain serves as a training ground for serious climbers attempting the Huayhuash Circuit trek. Visitors come to test their skills on high-altitude terrain before pursuing more demanding peaks.
Climbers should plan several days for acclimatization and work with experienced guides when attempting this peak. The best climbing season falls during the dry months when snow and ice conditions are most stable.
The west face route is less commonly used by climbers compared to other approaches on the mountain. This path has earned a special place in mountaineering history through a dramatic survival story that unfolded on its slopes.
