Batangas City, Component city in Calabarzon region, Philippines
Batangas City is a large city in Batangas province on Luzon island, in the southwestern part of the Calabarzon region. The area stretches from coastal zones to higher ground inland, where residential neighborhoods sit alongside port facilities and industrial zones.
A settlement was first established here in the late 16th century as a small town under Spanish colonial rule. In 1969 national legislation granted it official status as a city in its own right.
The city takes its name from the logs where fishers once spread their nets to dry. Today the streets and markets echo with Tagalog conversations, while the annual Sublian Festival honors devotion to the Holy Cross with traditional dances.
The international port sits on the western edge and links the city to other islands through regular ferry services. Visitors looking to get their bearings will find main roads running from the port into the city center and onward to higher neighborhoods.
The coastal waters off the city hold dive sites that rank among the most popular in the entire region. Several wrecks lie at accessible depths and draw divers from many countries.
