Bautista, Municipality in Pangasinan province, Philippines
Bautista is a municipality in Pangasinan province, in the Ilocos Region of the northern Philippines. It is made up of several barangays and sits in a flat, rural landscape where rice fields and small settlements alternate across the land.
Dominican missionaries came to the area in 1614 and built up a religious presence that shaped the community for generations. The municipality was formally founded on May 5, 1900, giving it the administrative status it still holds today.
Residents of Bautista make walis tambo brooms by hand, a traditional craft that the town is known for across the region. Watching the process is a reason many visitors stop here, as the work is done openly in homes and small workshops.
Bautista is easiest to reach by private vehicle or local transport from nearby towns in Pangasinan. A daytime visit works best, as small shops, markets, and craftspeople are active during those hours.
The words of the Philippine National Anthem were written in 1899 by the poet Jose Palma in the barangay of Poblacion West. Most people do not expect to find such a moment in the history of a nation connected to a small rural barangay.
