Manleluag Spring Protected Landscape, Protected landscape with natural hot springs in Mangatarem, Philippines
Manleluag Spring Protected Landscape is a protected area in the Zambales Mountains on Luzon, Philippines, centered on two natural hot springs near Mount Malabobo. The land around them covers forested hills crossed by two rivers that shape the terrain.
The area was set aside as a forest reserve in 1934 under Governor-General Frank Murphy. President Manuel Quezon then raised its status to a national park in 1940, changing the way the land was managed.
The thermal springs are a gathering spot for people from nearby towns who come to bathe in the warm water. The place is woven into everyday life for locals and is seen as a natural resource shared by the surrounding communities.
Paths wind through forested and hilly ground, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before setting out. Visiting in the dry season makes walking easier, as some trails can get slippery after rain.
The water from the two springs has a pH between 11 and 13, placing them among the most alkaline natural spring systems in the region. This unusual chemistry comes from water rising through rock layers beneath Mount Zambales.
