Agusan del Sur, Administrative province in Caraga region, Philippines
Agusan del Sur is a province in the Caraga region on Mindanao with broad river valleys and farmed areas covering roughly 10,000 square kilometers. The territory includes wide rice fields, low hills and forested sections surrounded by seven neighboring provinces.
The province emerged in April 1967 through a legislative act that split the former Agusan region into two separate administrative areas. Prosperidad was chosen as capital and took over governing functions for the southern part.
The Manobo and Higaonon groups maintain their ancestral crafts and languages in settlements across the province. Visitors can see traditional weaving and carved wooden objects in local communities, where skills pass from one generation to the next.
The Manila-Butuan Road links several municipalities and makes access to rural areas easier across the province. Travelers should note that distances between settlements can be considerable and road conditions vary in remote zones.
The Agusan, the largest river on Mindanao, crosses the province and shapes both the landscape and daily routines of people living along its banks. Fishermen use flat wooden boats built to the same design for decades to work in the calm side channels of the river.
