Bayugan is a component city in Agusan del Sur located in the northern portion of the province at an elevation of 270 meters (885 feet). The city extends across 688 square kilometers and is divided into 43 administrative subdivisions that blend rural and developed areas.
The settlement originated as a sitio of Barangay Maygatasan and grew into a municipality before gaining official recognition in 1961. It later achieved city status through the passage of Republic Act 9405, marking a significant milestone in its administrative development.
The name Bayugan comes from the Manobo language and refers to a traditional communication method using hollow wood pieces for signaling. This naming reflects the area's deep roots with the local population and their connection to the natural world.
