Musuan Peak, Active volcano in Maramag, Bukidnon, Philippines
Musuan Peak is a volcano near Maramag in Bukidnon province, Philippines, rising about 646 meters above sea level. The cone measures roughly three kilometers across at its base and shows clear traces of past eruptions on its slopes.
The volcano erupted in 1866 and 1867, showing its active nature at a time when the surrounding region was still sparsely settled. Another phreatic event was reported before 1891, marking the last known volcanic activity.
Local Bukidnon groups call the mountain Mount Calayo, meaning Fire Mountain, a name that reflects stories passed down through generations. Elders still share memories of smoke and ash that once rose from the summit.
Hiking routes start in Malaybalay and lead to the summit through different trails, with the northern slope passing through dense rainforest. Visitors should begin early and wear sturdy footwear, as the path can become slippery in places.
A zoological and botanical garden at the foot of the mountain runs a butterfly greenhouse and works on reforestation projects for the surrounding slopes. The facility breeds native plants and supports conservation efforts for endangered species in the region.
